Mission and Vision
History
In 2003 the Parkwood building was closed and we were offered a larger space
in the main hospital building. During our 5 years in this location our
program grew considerably. We hosted workshops and performances by many
internationally acclaimed educators and performers including:
- Joyce Rupp and MaryCatherine Burgess (Awaken and Embody the Celtic Spirit weekend)
- Tapas Fleming (Tapas Acupressure Technique® Professional Training)
- Mary Jo Bulbrook (Energy Medicine® Professional Training)
- Janet Menken (Healing Touch® Advanced Training)
- Pietro and Melanie Abela (ARC - A Return to Consciousness® Professional
Training)
- Wes Gietz (Emotional Freedom Technique® Professional Training)
- Beth Hedva (From Betrayal to Trust)
- Lana Skauge (Losing My Religion and Hands In Wood)
- Standing Bear (Shamanic Healing Training)
We also provided services to thousands of people through courses, workshops and individual sessions offered by our own associates.
The move to our lovely turn of the century house with its many upstairs rooms made it possible for us to expand our counselling, spiritual mentoring and healing programs with the services of many new associates practicing a wide variety of healing modalities.
In 2008 we moved to our present location. This move involved another large
renovation and a separation of our Strawberry Tree art studio to a large
light-filled room in St. Stephen's Anglican Church, where it continues
to this day.
In 2003 we were offered a rent-free space on the hospital's lower level to build our Strawberry Tree Art Studio. This enabled Straja Linder King and Tangus, her TDI Certified therapy dog, to provide individual art therapy sessions as well as art therapy groups for residents of L'Arche and the long term care residents upstairs in the hospital. In 2004 Spiritual Directions hosted a show and sale of dozens of pieces of art produced by L'Arche residents (a residential community for people with developmental disabilities
and their care-givers) with all proceeds going to the artists.
After 9/11 Spiritual Directions hosted a public peace event at Confederation
Park that involved many activities including a labyrinth walk, construction
of two community murals, discussion groups, meditation and music.
Team of Associates
In 1999, with the support of the Community Opportunity Foundation of Alberta,
John Griffith founded Spiritual Directions, a spiritual development centre
that would connect with and provide services to members of the community.
In 2000 we moved into the Parkwood building of the old Grace Hospital Centre
in Calgary. At that time Spiritual Directions consisted of a Director,
Admin Assistant, Web Manager, Counsellor, 3 Spiritual Directors, and a
small cadre of program facilitators, some of whom are still with us nearly
13 years later.

In the last 2 years we have developed an official board, become a registered
not-for-profit society, changed our official name to Spiritual Directions
Centre (Calgary) and begun the process of becoming a charity. In September
2011 John Griffith retired from his role as Executive Director and Clara
King was hired to fill the position.
We were thrilled by the wonderfully enthusiastic crowd which celebrated
12 successful years of Spiritual Directions Centre under John Griffith's
leadership, and supported the passing of the "Walking Stick for the
Journey" on to Clara King, our new Executive Director. This symbolic
stick was presented to John at our inaugural celebration in 2000 and has
been part of the Centre ever since. |
